*Ruby Bridges had a father that didn't think it was good to go to a white school because he was afraid that a white girl would beat her up.But Ruby Bridges had a mom that thought it was a good idea to go because she would get an Eduction.
*Ruby Bridges was the first girl to go to a white school.
Ruby Bridges was a young black girl who lived in New Orleans, Louisiana in the 1950s. Back then, schools in many places around America were segregated, which means that white children and black children were not allowed to go to the same schools. Many people thought this was unfair and tried to change the laws.
In 1954, the Supreme Court of the United States said that schools should be integrated, which means that white and black children could go to the same schools. It took years for white schools to open their doors to black children, but in 1960 Ruby Bridges was chosen to be one of the first black children to go to a school that used to be for white children only.
Ruby's father did not want her to go to the white school. He was afraid that people might hurt Ruby or do other bad things to the family. But her mother thought that Ruby would get a better education at the new school, and it was important to show other black children that they could go to school with white children.
To keep Ruby from getting hurt, she and her mother had to walk to school with a group of special policemen called marshals. The marshals walked with Ruby every day, and she did not miss a single day of school. Ruby's teacher was named Mrs. Henry. Mrs. Henry was very nice to Ruby and made sure that she got a good education.
The parents of the white children were very angry. They did not want their children to go to school with black children, so they kept their children at home. For months, Ruby was the only student in her first grade class. Slowly, the white children began to come back to school, and when Ruby started second grade, the school had many white and black children.
In the years that followed, many segregated schools in the United States began to be integrated. Ruby Bridges got married and had four children of her own. She often travels around the country making speeches telling people that schools are a place to bring people of all races together.
